The Dissociated Path: Open_Notes 5

the sad weight of the world - the dismal science of economics -- not a celebration of life but a "sale"bration - culture of commodity - the creation and promotion of images (celebrities, etc.) - consumers (or the masses) don't respond to reason but to deeply embedded social symbols - easily swayed by emotional appeals of advertisers (obedience, etc.) - you're not stylish or ostentatious enough - cooptation - society is trying to make us discontented with everything we do and insecure about who we are - if people thought about real issues and needs instead of manufactured desires, the economy would collapse and we would have total anarchy.

buy distractions from a simple life - constant change - traditional loyalties and ties have all been challenged or superseded by the allure of the new (way of walking) - newer equals better equals must have (newer = better = must have) -- affluenza (an unhappy condition of overload, debt, anxiety and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more) -- unrest of the Human Spirit - a sense of meaningless, disenchantment, a search for ultimate meaning - increasingly de-personalized life - loss of identity - you have to be strong enough to balance the influence with your instincts and wisdom or you will be overwhelmed.
