what is the problem that this technology (computers) is the solution? - the culture is drifting in a certain direction - the love of technology - resist where you think it is worthwhile resisting vs. technology - it impacts the way we think about communicating with each other - Marshall McLuhan "the medium is the message" - what we communicate is a function in part of how we communicate - different resonances (ie. card or in person), different meaning - each medium has its own bias, its own way of giving expression to an idea, when you change the medium, you change to some extent the idea (ie., print; TV).
TV generation - a decline in literacy, a different mind, bias - a different way of viewing the world - an interesting set of distinctions - information, knowledge, wisdom -- information = statements about the facts of the world (mostly unnoticed, unmentioned, unreported) - facts become information when we take note of them, speak of them, report them - 1840's information scarcity problem began to be solved (information faster, in diverse forms, ie. telegraphy, photography) developing into our current problem of information overload, information glut, incoherence -- knowledge = organized information - information that leads you into wanting other information - knowing where to go for other information - information that's given in a context, embedded in a frame, so that you can make some sort of sense out of it [knowledge engineering] -- wisdom = a further step where you know what questions that come from other sources of knowledge to address to this knowledge [application].
